Established in 1989, the Border Texan of the Year Banquet honors individuals who have championed progress in education, business, healthcare, transportation and more. Since its inception, the event has contributed over $1 million to nonprofit organizations and scholarships across the Rio Grande Valley.
Jim & Kathy Collins have lived in McAllen since moving from Dallas in 1980. They met at SMU, married, and lived in Dallas for 10 years. Kathy is originally from McAllen and Jim from Amarillo, Texas.
They are blessed with five children and their spouses and fifteen grandchildren. Two of their children and families live in the Rio Grande Valley and the other three children and families live in San Antonio.
Jim works for the family office in investments, started Rioco Partners that invests in real estate, and is on the Board of Directors for Vantage Bank Texas. He is the Trustee for the James W. and Kathleen C. Collins Family Foundation, the Loring Cook Foundation, and a Co-Trustee of the Eli Unitrust Foundation for the Buckner Rio Grande Children's Home. Kathy has been active raising children and helping in numerous community activities and charities, serving on the Board of the Vannie E. Cook Jr. Cancer Foundation.

Through their leadership, service, and dedication, they have positively impacted the region, leaving a lasting legacy of excellence and progress.
